August 1, 2004 Bulletin New threats to commerical and financial interests "Credible intelligence" indicates that al Qaeda has been plotting to carry out suicide attacks on corporations based in the city, according to New York Police Department statement. An "overseas source" has provided information about a threat to "commercial and financial institutions in New York. Officials are taking these threats very seriously. The "chatter" that was intercepted is considered reliable and caused federal and local agencies to hold extended meetings over the weekend. According to a statement released Sunday by the NYPD, "Intelligence reporting indicates that al Qaeda continues to target commercial and financial institutions, as well as international orgnanizations, inside the United States." The statement further recommended, "that corporate and institutional security directors review their protection of HVAC systems, parking installations, and security in general." Officials are particularly concerned about one or more suicide truck bombings against New York corporate targets. Officials acknowledge that truck bombs are very difficult to intercept and pose a substantial threat to facilities in dense metropolitan areas. There is no plan to elevate the national threat warning, according to a federal official, but the dissemination of threat information may play a substantial part in deterring potential attacks.
